Take God at His Word

Sermon Series: Take God at His Word
Sermon Title: Take God at His Word
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 6:9-11

Almost everyone has a fear of not having enough money – either to meet their current need or for their future needs. Inside most of us is a unspoken thought that says “Lord, I’m scared to give!”

God’s answer/response to our fears is that we must not rely on ourselves to provide for our needs!
We are to trust God to provide for all our needs (including financial).

Two foundational truths about God that we must first understand before we can start even thinking about the topic of giving:

1. Take God at His Word.

Hebrews 11:6 “6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.“

Is God trustworthy? Do I trust Him? Do I trust Him completely?

2. He is the Source of all we need

God says that He will provide for us.
Luke 12:22-31 – Do not worry about what you will eat, drink, wear, etc. God knows you need these things.

Romans 8:32 “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

Giving

2 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”[a]
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”

Two laws or precepts about giving:

1. The law of the harvest: “You reap what you sow”.
2. God rewards the givers

Matthew 6:3-4: “3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Application
Our fears about being able to provide for our needs and about not having enough for the future are real. Telling ourselves we should not feel that way is just foolish and doesn’t help us one bit.
What does help is to walk in the ways in which God has told us to walk: trust completely in His infinite love for us and in His promises that He will provide for our needs.
And it is from that position that we can truly give – give secretly and joyously and generously from what God has given us!
